# Can you get legally married in Mallorca as a foreigner?

In most cases, no, not at the venue itself. Non-resident foreigners generally cannot hold the legally binding civil ceremony at a private finca in Mallorca. What almost every couple does instead is complete the legal marriage at home, or at a Spanish civil registry if one of them qualifies, and then hold the ceremony that matters, in the fruit garden at Sencelles, with their vows and their guests. The two parts are separate. The legal one is paperwork. The one at the finca is the wedding. Rules change and depend on nationality and residency, so confirm your own position with your consulate before you fix a date.

## Do we have to do the legal part first?

Not strictly, but most couples do. Signing at a registry office at home a few days or weeks before you fly is the simplest route. Some do it the week they return. Either way the ceremony at the finca is unaffected. Your guests will not notice a difference, and your photographs will not show one. If you want the dates to match, a short registry appointment on the morning of travel is common.

A few couples with a Spanish-resident partner, or a long enough connection to the island, can marry at the civil registry in Palma. That route takes months of paperwork and an appointment date you do not choose. Treat it as the exception and check it directly with the registry and your consulate.

## Who leads the ceremony at the finca?

Whoever you choose. Because the ceremony at the finca is not the legal one, anyone can lead it: a friend, a parent, or someone you have found yourselves who leads ceremonies as a profession. Couples choose their own suppliers, and we share the house’s practical requirements with whoever they pick. The ceremony works best at seven, when the light is low and the heat has gone.

If you want a religious blessing, a priest, rabbi or minister can travel to the finca for a blessing that follows your legal marriage. You arrange it directly with them.

## What documents will we need?

For the legal marriage, that depends on where you sign. For a registry at home, you need what your registry asks for, usually identity documents, proof of address and notice given within the required period. For a Spanish registry, expect to be asked for passports, birth certificates, a certificate of no impediment, sworn translations and a padrón or proof of residence. Your consulate will have a current list.

For the finca ceremony, you need nothing from the state. You need someone to lead it, a running order and a plan for the weather; the house holds about 30 indoors, so the backup has to be agreed in advance. We ask for a copy of your event insurance and your supplier list a month ahead.

## How long should we allow?

Twelve to eighteen months from first enquiry to the day is comfortable for a summer Saturday. Nine months is workable outside July and August. The legal part at home needs its own notice period, often four to six weeks, so book the registry at the same time you confirm the finca. Build the timeline backwards from the ceremony hour. Seven in the evening is the hour we recommend from May to September. Earlier in spring and autumn.

The ceremony is in the fruit garden. The drinks reception is outside, for up to 80 including the twelve who stay. Music goes until midnight. Guests not staying book their own accommodation nearby. ## Tell us the dates and the occasion.

We reply within 24 hours, usually sooner, and we will tell you honestly whether the house is right for it.
