# When is the best time of year for a Mallorca finca wedding?

Late May to the middle of June, and the second half of September into early October. Those two windows give warm evenings without the full heat of high summer, long light for photographs, flights that are not at their most crowded, and an island that is open but not full. July and August work, and many couples choose them for school holidays, but the ceremony moves later, the afternoon is spent in the pool rather than in the garden, and the roads to the coves are busy. Here is the year, month by month, as it plays out at Sencelles.

## What is the weather like each month?

April is green and uncertain. The almond blossom is over, the olives are in new leaf, and a cold front can arrive. Daytime is mild, evenings need a wrap. Sunset is around half past eight.

May is the first reliable month. Days in the mid-twenties, evenings clear and warm by the end of the month. The lavender is beginning. Sunset moves towards nine.

June is the month we would choose. Long days, dry ground, sunset after nine, cherries and apricots in the garden. The sea is warm enough for the coves. The heat is present but not oppressive.

July and August are hot. Afternoons in the mid-thirties on the Pla de Mallorca, the island’s flat farming heartland, which sits inland and gets less breeze than the coast. Nights stay warm, which is good for dancing. Figs ripen. Sunset around half past eight in August.

September is the second window. The heat softens week by week, the sea is at its warmest, the grape harvest is under way in Binissalem and the wineries are busy and open. Sunset moves from eight to half past seven.

October is quieter, golden, and slightly more variable. Pomegranates split on the tree. Sunset is around seven. Early October is still a good ceremony month. Late October needs a wet-weather plan you are happy with.

November to March we do not recommend for an outdoor ceremony. The houses are warm, and small winter weddings in the main house are possible for about 30, but a drinks reception outside for 80 belongs to the warm months.

## What time should the ceremony be?

Work back from the sun. In June, a ceremony at seven in the fruit garden gives you an hour of soft light for photographs, a drink as the sun drops behind the Tramuntana, and dinner outside at half past eight in the last of the glow. In September, six or half past six. In early October, five or half past five. In July and August, seven or later, because the heat before then is not kind to guests in formal clothes. Music runs until midnight, whatever the month. Indoors holds about 30, so whatever the month, every outdoor plan needs a backup agreed in advance.

## Which months are the most crowded?

July and the first three weeks of August. Flights into Palma are full, the north-coast coves fill by eleven, and Palma itself is slow to move through. If your guests want to make a week of it, May, June and September give them the island at a better pace. Spring and autumn also leave more room at the hotels nearby.

Saturdays in June and September are the first to go. For those months, enquire twelve to eighteen months ahead. For May and early October, nine months is usually enough.
